Take Charge of Your Wellbeing at Work
Your health starts with you — first and foremost. But too often, people are quick to blame everyone else for their stress and tension.
Did your workplace offer a monthly yoga session as part of a wellbeing initiative?
Maybe it was a contribution towards a spa treatment or gym membership... or perhaps they just provide lunch on a Friday to show they care — except there’s nothing remotely nutritious in that lunch.
I hate to say it, but you are the person in charge of your own health and wellbeing. That means being accountable for how you feel at work. And if things don’t feel right? It’s time to find your voice.
Here are a few simple suggestions you could make:
Healthier food options: If your employer loves to end the week with sweet treats (I used to 🐖🐷 when there were doughnuts and sausage rolls on my desk), consider requesting healthier alternatives. Sugar spikes lead to energy dips, which don’t help productivity or mood.
Standing desks or movement zones: A space to stand and take calls or fire off emails can do wonders — better hip mobility, improved circulation, more oxygen, more energy.
Shorter, more meaningful meetings: There’s nothing worse than sitting through a meeting that says and does absolutely nothing to boost morale.
Bring in real wellbeing support: Suggest guest speakers who understand stress management. And if you're inviting a wellbeing specialist in, commit to a consistent programme — at least 6 weeks — and track progress.
Keep it simple: Wellness can feel overwhelming, especially for those who aren't already into it. But it’s not that people don’t care — everyone wants better sleep and less stress. They’re just too overwhelmed with deadlines and constant demands to focus on it.
P.S. Are you mouth breathing while reading this? Time to close it — and shift your focus to your nose 👃 You’ll feel so much better.
